Kickers and punters are an odd bunch. They get little to no praise when things go right, because silence means they’re doing their jobs. But when stuff goes badly, oh my, does it go badly. And since punters and kickers are only out there for a handful of plays a game, they’re the last line of defense -- they’re all alone on the field, exposed, where all kinds of awful things can happen to them.
San Diego punter Mike Scifres needs a hug
Because punting is hard and dangerous.
This is one of those things.
Chargers’ punter Mike Scifres got bull-rushed and went down hard, leading to a blocked kick and a Tampa Bay touchdown. Scifres was crumpled in a heap as the rest of his team chased after the Buccaneers players, and the kicker sadness meter went up a little bit more today.
