Falcons vs. Saints, Week 10: Saints fans revel in maddening win

Canal St. Chronicles writer Hans Petersen describes the range of emotions during the Saints win over the rival Falcons.

The New Orleans Saints used a lot of offense and some timely defensive stops to beat the previously unbeaten Atlanta Falcons. The Saints fell behind early, but used their explosive offense to take a 14-10 lead early in the 2nd quarter.

A pair of Drew Brees touchdown passes, one just before halftime, the other in the 3rd quarter, gave the Saints the lead for good at 28-17, but it wasn't that simple. The Saints punted on three of their last four possessions, while the defense allowed the Falcons to score a touchdown and field goal on consecutive possessions to pull within one. The Saints tacked on a field goal the next drive to extend the lead to four. At that point the defense took over, forcing the Falcons to turn the ball over on downs on consecutive drives, but not without allowing them to come within a Roddy White dropped catch of taking the lead.

Hans Petersen of Canal St. Chronicles summed up the game as an up and down performance, with just enough up to get the win.

Both the defense and offense took turns looking brilliant, and then maddeningly ineffective over the course of the game, but it was just enough to win.

The Saints are now 4-5 and can get back to .500 with a win next week over the Oakland Raiders.
