Ray Edwards released by Falcons

Atlanta has parted ways with defensive end Ray Edwards.

Daniel Shirey-US PRESSWIRE

A day after their first loss of the season, the Atlanta Falcons released Ray Edwards, according to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports. The defensive end had not performed well since signing a five-year, $27.5 million deal with the team in 2011.

Edwards had little impact in the nine games he played for Atlanta this season. He recorded nine tackles and did not have a sack. He had lost his starting job after the team's Week 6 bye. Kroy Biermann is expected to pick up snaps in place of Edwards.

Over the offseason, Edwards had surgery on his knee that might have limited his performance on the field. His Falcons career will end with 42 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 25 games.

Prior to coming to Atlanta, Edwards spent five seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. In his final two seasons in Minnesota, he recorded 16.5 sacks.

At just 27 years old, Edwards is likely to get another shot in the NFL.
