Willis McGahee injury: Broncos RB out 6-8 weeks with torn MCL

Denver Broncos veteran tailback Willis McGahee reportedly tore his MCL on Sunday and could miss roughly two months on the field.

US PRESSWIRE

Injured during the second quarter of Sunday's win over San Diego, Denver Broncos starting tailback Willis McGahee is now expected to miss upwards of eight weeks of action with a torn MCL according to a report by Adam Schefter of ESPN.

While Broncos head coach John Fox was originally quick to say that he kept his starting running back on the sidelines for precautionary reasons against the Chargers due to the significant swelling, McGahee has a well-documented track record of knee injuries dating back to his days in college with the Miami Hurricanes.

To make matters worse, the 31-year-old McGahee also has a fracture in the leg that is contributing to this timetable, according to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, making it even more unlikely that the veteran runner would be able to return close to full health anytime soon.

The Broncos will undoubtedly expand the role of rookie speedster Ronnie Hillman while McGahee is unable to suit up, as the third-round pick out of San Diego State may very well be Denver's feature back for the remainder of the season. Although Hillman's small stature (5'9) and frame do not make him an ideal candidate to take on the lion's share of carries in any team's offense, he is explosive enough to do serious damage as both an outside runner and receiver out of the backfield:
