Dolphins vs. Colts, Week 9 reaction: Luck’s big day raises questions about Miami secondary

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck's big day — setting a record for the most passing yards by a rookie — understandably has fans of the Miami Dolphins wondering how the Miami secondary could be picked apart so badly.

Over at The Phinsider, the bloggers were quick to point out that the final score, 23-20 in favor of the Colts, was far closer than the game itself, as Luck’s 433 yards were an impressive feat of offensive strength. What kept the Dolphins in the game, according to the guys, was the Dolphins’ own quarterback, Ryan Tannehill.

The only thing that kept the Dolphins in the game was Ryan Tannehill’s right arm. The Dolphins own rookie quarterback three for 290 yards on 22-for-38 passing, finding the endzone once, and ending the game with a 90.9 passer rating.

But the real story of the day was Luck, and the pass defense he so easily mastered.

Miami simply had no answer for Luck on the day, especially on third down, when the Colts were 13-for-19 on conversions. The Colts took it to the Dolphins secondary, and no one was ready to respond. ... It was an ugly day for the secondary.

Beyond the secondary’s performance, the bloggers had positive takeaway from the game when it came to the rush defense, which kept the game as close as it was and continued an impressive streak.

The Dolphins rushing defense stepped up for most of the game, holding the Colts below 100 yards rushing and keeping any player from reaching the 100 yards rushing mark for the 22nd straight game,
