Cowboys Executive Vice President Stephen Jones dropped in on his team's practice Thursday and gave an impromptu press conference on the state of the Cowboys. Asked about if head coach Jason Garrett is coaching for his job, Jones told reporters "I won't even comment on that, period. That's ridiculous."

Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones says Garrett is ‘incredibly smart,’ and the team is ‘going in a good direction.’


Jones talked at further length about Garrett, saying that he is a “great leader,” that “no one understands the game more,” and that “the players respect him.” Jones also said of Garrett that “we have had a lot of great offenses here under Jason. We are moving the ball good this year for the most part.” On Tuesday, Jones shot down speculation about Sean Payton joining the Cowboys, saying on 105.3 The Fan of Payton’s impending free agency, “that has nothing to do with us.”
Jones also responded in the affirmative when asked if the 3-5 Cowboys are underachieving. “We had higher expectations than this,” Jones said. “We have to play better. We have to finish.”
