Browns using rest of season to find out if Brandon Weeden is their future quarterback

Cleveland Browns’ CEO Joe Banner announced on Thursday that he hopes to use the rest of the season to determine if Brandon Weeden is the organization’s quarterback of the future.

With the Cleveland Browns expected to overhaul their front office after the season, team CEO Joe Banner informed Mary Kay Kabot of The Plain Dealer on Thursday that his organization plans to use the rest of 2012 to determine if quarterback Brandon Weeden fits into the team's future plans.

The 29-year-old rookie has been wildly inconsistent through his first nine games under center with nine touchdown passes and 12 interceptions, ranking 32nd in the NFL with just a 67.9 quarterback rating. Though the Browns used a first-round draft pick last April in order to bring Weeden’s accurate arm to Cleveland, his advanced age due to his professional baseball career will not afford him the same type of leeway given to most rookies.

Already at a dismal 2-7 on the year, the Browns are likely to once again wind up with a top draft pick next spring barring a significant turnaround. One of Weeden’s biggest assets coming out of Oklahoma State appeared to be his NFL-readiness, and it’s quite possible that the Browns aren’t entirely sold on having to wait around another two or three years for him to develop. With a number of elite college signal callers set to hit the draft pool after the season, Weeden will definitely have to elevate his level of play over his final seven games in order to keep his job.
