Texas Tech coach search: Chad Morris interviewing for job

The 44-year old Morris, the offensive coordinator at Clemson, was a remarkably successful high school coach in Texas for 14 years before moving to the collegiate ranks in 2010.

US PRESSWIRE

The meteoric rise of Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris shows no signs of stopping, as Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt confirmed on Tuesday to Greg Wallace that he was interviewing Morris for the vacant job in Lubbock.

The Red Raiders are looking for a new head coach after Tommy Tuberville unexpectedly bolted to Cincinnati over the weekend.

Under Morris’ direction, the Tigers have been one of the most explosive offenses in the country in the last two seasons. Clemson is No. 6 in total offense in 2012, averaging 42.4 points a game.

Returning back to Texas may be a natural fit for Morris, who spent the entirety of his coaching career in the state’s high school ranks before taking the offensive coordinator job at Tulsa in 2010.

Long known as an offensive mastermind, Morris coached Austin Lake Travis to back-to-back 16-0 state title seasons in 2008 and 2009, with future Texas and SMU QB Garrett Gilbert behind center.

The other likely finalist for the Red Raiders job is Kliff Kingsbury, a former Tech great under Mike Leach who is now the offensive coordinator at Texas A&M.
