NFL challenge rule won’t be changed for playoffs

Television replays showed that Texans running back Justin Forsett was down by contact before getting up to sprint for the score, but a challenge flag thrown by Lions coach Jim Schwartz nullified any potential replay review.

The NFL will not make any immediate rule changes regarding the controversial challenge rule before the beginning of the postseason, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com and NFL Network.

The rule was cast into the spotlight on Thanksgiving Day when a challenge flag thrown by Lions head coach Jim Schwartz on an automatically reviewed scoring play nullified the referees' ability to review a play that was ruled on the field as an 81-yard touchdown by Justin Forsett of the Houston Texans.

Television replays showed that Forsett was down by contact before getting up to sprint for the score. The third-quarter touchdown cut the Lions’ lead to just three points and the Texans went on to defeat the Lions in overtime, 34-31.

According to Rapoport, the NFL plans to discuss the rule on Wednesday at the December Special League Meeting, but does not plan to implement any potential changes until the offseason.
