Jay Ratliff injury: Cowboys NT has surgery, out 3-6 weeks

The veteran nose tackle will be sidelined for at least the remainder of the regular season after undergoing surgery to repair a sports hernia.

Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE

The Dallas Cowboys will be without nose tackle Jay Ratliff for the remainder of the regular season after the eight-year veteran underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia on Thursday morning. His recovery is expected to take anywhere from three to six weeks.

Ratliff figured to slide into the spot vacated by Josh Brent, who was lost for the season following the accident that killed Jerry Brown, but with Ratliff sidelined the Cowboys will have to rely on other option to plug the holes in their thinning defensive line. Sean Lissemore, the team's third-string nose tackle should see a majority of snaps at the position on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Rob Calloway, a rookie out of Saginaw Valley State was called up to the practice squad to provide depth on the Cowboys' defensive line.

Should the 31-year-old Ratliff have a quick recovery and the Cowboys sneak into the NFC Wild Card picture, it is possible that he could return to action for the playoffs, but both scenarios seem unlikely at this time.
