Tim Tebow’s CFL rights owned by Montreal Alouettes

If the Jets part ways with their backup quarterback, he could play in the Canadian Football League.

Tim Tebow hasn't started a single game in a New York Jets uniform, sitting behind Mark Sanchez for the duration of his time in the Big Apple. After Sanchez's meltdown against the Tennessee Titans on Monday night, Greg McElroy leapfrogged Tebow on the depth chart, as the second-year quarterback out of Alabama was named the Jets' starter for this week's game against the San Diego Chargers.

If Tebow and the Jets part ways in the offseason, he may be unable to find an NFL job as a starting quarterback. But that wouldn’t leave Tebow without options. For one thing, he could figuratively jump across the 49th parallel. The Montreal Alouettes could make an offer to the former first-round draft pick, as they hold exclusive negotiating rights with Tebow among CFL teams. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats used to hold those same negotiating rights.

The Alouettes do have an incumbent starter, with 40-year old Anthony Calvillo coming back for another year. But unless Tebow is willing to change positions, a move to the CFL may be Tebow’s only option if he wants to continue to play under center.

Tebow carried the ball three times for 15 yards and threw one incomplete pass in the Jets’ 14-10 loss on Monday night.
