Adrian Peterson’s chase for the rushing record continues

Adrian Peterson’s quest to set the NFL single-season rushing record will continue Sunday against the Houston Texans

Jamie Squire

Minnesota's Adrian Peterson is still nearly 300 yards from Eric Dickerson's NFL single-season rushing record, but Peterson could surpass the 2,000-yard mark on Sunday against the Texans.

Peterson, who has rushed for at least 100 yards in eight consecutive games, is 188 yards shy of 2,000. He’s coming off a 212-yard performance against St. Louis and has topped the 180 mark thee times this season. After starting the season slow, Peterson has gone on a tear unlike anything ever seen in NFL history. Peterson has rushed for 1,313 yards over the last eight games, the highest rushing total over a single season eight-game stretch in NFL history.

While Peterson may have a chance at surpassing 2,000 yards this week, the ultimate goal is still Dickerson’s single-season record of 2,105 yards. Peterson will need to average 147 yards per game over the final two games to set the record. He’s averaging 129.4 rushing yards per game this season, but 164.1 rushing yards per game in his last eight games.

Peterson has shredded some excellent run defenses in recent weeks, but he will face another challenge on Sunday. The Texans are fifth in the NFL, allowing just 93.2 rushing yards per game. Only two running backs have topped 100 rushing yards in a game against Houston this season.
