Pat Shurmur, Tom Heckert expected to be fired by Browns, according to report

New owner ‘cleaning house’ in Cleveland.

Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert are expected to be fired, according to a report from Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer. Cabot reports the firings will take place Monday, one day after the Browns' season finale against Pittsburgh. Both Shurmur and Heckert have been on the hot seat for months due to a mid-season change in Browns ownership.

Shurmur was selected by then-team president Mike Holmgren to become the Browns' head coach in 2011. He is 9-22 in two seasons at the helm, finishing last in the AFC North both seasons. Prior to taking the Browns job, Shurmur had been offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams and was a longtime assistant to Andy Reid in Philadelphia. His uncle, Fritz Shurmur, was defensive coordinator for Holmgren with Green Bay.

Heckert has been Cleveland’s general manager and vice president of player personnel since 2010, having held the same position with Philadelphia from 2001-2009. The Browns were 14-31 in his three years in the front office.

Truck stop magnate Jimmy Haslam finalized his purchase of the franchise on Oct. 25, 2012. Before the sale was final, Haslam announced that Holmgren would not return as team president, terminating the link between Shurmur, Heckert, and the franchise’s upper management and making their termination likely.
