Vikings vs. Packers 2012: Difficult to argue for Christian Ponder any longer

Christian Ponder’s performance Sunday will only give credence to the cries of Vikings fans who want a new quarterback in Minnesota.

US PRESSWIRE

The Minnesota Vikings lost their second consecutive divisional game Sunday as they fell to the Green Bay Packers, 23-14.

Adrian Peterson had another phenomenal day for the Vikings, rushing for for 210 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries, but in the fourth quarter with the Vikings trailing by nine points, he did not have a touch. Instead, the Minnesota offense relied on quarterback Christian Ponder and the passing game. And Ponder failed them.

Two interceptions in the red zone proved costly to the Minnesota offense, and at the four-minute mark of the fourth quarter, he had only 33 yards passing. Ponder’s future as the starting quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings has been questioned of late following several poor performances, and after Sunday, arguably the worst performance of his career, the skeptics certainly will not be silent. Christopher Gates of SB Nation’s Minnesota Vikings blog, The Daily Norseman, writes that the situation is getting to the point where Ponder cannot be defended any longer.

At this point, I may be the only person on the planet (outside of Samantha Steele) still supporting him. I’ve looked for excuses, I’ve looked for reasons, I’ve looked for glimmers of hope. . .really, I have.

And after today. . .well, I can’t do it any more...It kills me to say that. . .really, it does. I wanted Ponder to be the guy that the Vikings developed for the long term and carried this team for a decade or more at the quarterback position after years of stop-gaps and temporary solutions. Part of me still wants it to happen. But, at this point, I’m just not sure it’s going to be the case.

The Vikings' playoff hopes took a huge hit with the loss, as they now sit at a meager 6-6. Next week they look to get back in the win column at home against the Chicago Bears.
