Bears vs. Lions 2012: Chicago defense disruptive in victory

Chicago picked up a win over Detroit that was vital in order to keep its playoff hopes alive, forcing four turnovers in the process. Unfortunately for the Bears, they would be eliminated from playoff contention later in the day.

USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bears delivered a victory over the Detroit Lions in a must-win situation on Sunday, keeping their playoff hopes alive at the time. Chicago's defense was a key to the victory, as it put pressure on Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and forced four turnovers:

The defense did what we have come to expect: Matthew Stafford was harrassed all day long, and the Lions coughed up the football four times. The defense looked like a playoff defense, despite Brian Urlacher being sidelined with a hamstring.

Stafford fumbled twice, losing both to the Bears; he also threw an interception. And while Stafford did throw for 272 yards, the Bears were able to limit him from making big plays via the pass. Lions star wide receiver Calvin Johnson was held to 72 yards receiving -- it was the first time he'd been held under 100 yards since Oct. 28.

After taking care of Detroit, Chicago needed Green Bay to beat Minnesota in order to earn a Wild Card berth. But the Vikings beat the Packers with a last-second field goal, ending the Bears’ season. Chicago finished the year 3-5 after a 7-1 start.
