Ken Whisenhunt fired: Arizona Cardinals clean house after 5-11 finish

The Arizona Cardinals have terminated Ken Whisenhunt, the only head coach that directed the team to a Super Bowl appearance.

USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Cardinals have parrted with head coach Ken Whisenhunt. The organization fired Whisenhunt on Monday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. This follows a disappointing season that saw the Cardinals finish with a 5-11 record, the second losing season in three years at Arizona under Whisenhunt.
Whisenhunt signed on for a four year, $23 million contract in February 2010. Arizona made two playoff appearances in Whisenhunt’s first three seasons, including an incredible run to the Super Bowl in 2008-09 after winning the NFC West with only a 9-7 record. The Cardinals would win the NFC West again in 2009 with a 10-6 record. Arizona would go 4-2 in the playoffs and 27-21 in Whisenhunt’s first three seasons.
Whisenhunt’s next three seasons have not gone quite as well. Since Kurt Warner retired, Arizona has struggled to get consistent production at the quarterback position from Derek Anderson, Kevin Kolb or John Skelton. Arizona’s offense would plummet to record-low levels, with the Cardinals falling to last in the country in offensive DVOA in 2012.
