Eagles vs. Giants 2012: ‘Typical 2012 Eagles’ in Andy Reid’s likely final game

The Philadelphia Eagles were blown out by the New York Giants Sunday, although the main story surrounding the team is the imminent firing of head coach Andy Reid after their 4-12 finish.

The Philadelphia Eagles were dominated in every facet of the game Sunday by their divisional rivals, the New York Giants, but their fans weren't too beat up about the hideous loss. After all, as Bleeding Green Nation noted in their postgame recap, it only gets better from here for a team looking to recover from their worst season in a decade.

The 42-7 loss was as bad as it sounds. The Giants still believed they had playoff life when the game started, although a Chicago Bears win would eliminated them shortly after the game's end. As such, the Giants played like they meant it, jumping out to a 21-0 start, allowing a touchdown, then scoring the game's final 21 points. With the postseason ruled out for Philadelphia months ago, they were listless. As Jason Brewer of Bleeding Green Nation wrote, the action on the field itself wasn't even worth recapping:

The game really isn't worth recapping very much. It was typical of what we've seen a lot of this season. Michael Vick really never got anything going and turned the ball over again. The secondary was completely torched once again and finally Nnamdi Asomugha was shown the bench. There wasn't much in the way of pass protection.

Like I said, typical 2012 Eagles.

However, the action off the field was very important: for starters, the Eagles’ draft pick - No. 4 overall - was cemented. But significantly more important is some news long in the making, but that isn’t yet: it appears Philadelphia will fire Andy Reid Monday. Dan Klausner of Bleeding Green Nation sent the coach off after 14 seasons with the Eagles:

One day we’ll be able to look back upon the totality of Andy Reid’s stint in Philadelphia with fondness, but right now the feelings of disappointment and ultimate unfulfillment remain raw and pervasive. Adios, Andy. Sometimes you just have to recognize when a relationship has reached its end. We need something new, and, honestly, so does he.

Reid was reportedly told of his firing Friday, and it will be made official on Monday.
