Jamaal Charles injury: Chiefs RB hurts ribs, returns to game

Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles sustained a rib injury against the Browns, but did return to the field after sitting out one offensive series.

Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles was injured in the second quarter of Kansas City's Week 14 game against the Cleveland Browns. Charles was injured on a 15-yard run, and the initial speculation was that he sustained a rib injury. A subsequent press box announcement did characterize it as a rib issue and indicated his return was questionable. But after sitting out an offensive series, Charles did come back onto the field for Kansas City's final possession of the first half.

Browns defensive end Jabaal Sheard fell on him at the end of the run, but it's not exactly clear which blow caused the injury. The Chiefs top wideout, Dwayne Bowe, already sustained a rib injury earlier in the game and had to go to the locker room. His return was also questionable.

Kansas City has one of the best rushing attacks in the league, averaging 146.7 yards per game. That has largely been done on the back of Charles, who has rolled through opposing defenses in the second half of the season. Charles has broken 100 yards in three of his last four games and exceeded that in the first quarter alone against Cleveland. He opened the game with an 80-yard touchdown burst down the right sideline.

The Browns lead the Chiefs, 10-7, at halftime and if Bowe and Charles are both hampered in the second half, that certainly won’t help Kansas City’s offensive cause as they go for back-to-back wins.
