New York Jets defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis will serve 45 days in jail, starting June 15, on misdemeanor assault and battery charges. He initially faced a felony malicious wounding charge with up to 20 years in prison before striking a plea agreement last week. Ellis was born in Jamaica, and could have been deported out of the country as a result.

New York Jets defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis could miss the beginning of training camp while serving out a 45-day jail sentence for misdemeanor assault and battery.

Ellis’ charges stem from an incident in 2010 at Hampton University. He claimed he was defending his girlfriend at the time. Ellis could miss the beginning of training camp due to his jail sentence. He will get out of jail around the official start of camp on Aug. 1. The Jets’ first public practice will take place Aug. 2.
