Jim Schwartz Gets Contract Extension From Lions

Jim Schwartz and the Detroit Lions have come to terms on a multi-year extension for the head coach. The Lions made the playoffs for the first time since 1999 last season.

Jim Schwartz has agreed to a multi-year extension with the Detroit Lions, the team's official site reports. The exact length and financial details of the new contract have not yet been disclosed.

The extension comes as little surprise. The Lions have steadily improved since Schwartz took over following the 0-16 season in 2008. The Lions went 2-14 during the regular season in 2009, improving to 6-10 in 2010 and 10-6 in 2011. This past season, Detroit made the playoffs for the first time in 12 years.

Both Schwartz and the organization seem loathe to talk about the negotiations. Schwartz has said several times, “the next time I comment on my contract will be the first time.” The 2012 season would have been the final year of the four-year deal Schwartz signed in 2009.
