Justin Blackmon Arrest: Can NFL, Jaguars Suspend WR For DUI?

Justin Blackmon was arrested early Sunday morning for aggravated DUI in Stillwater, Okla. The next question for football fans is whether the NFL and/or the Jaguars can or will discipline the rookie wide receiver.

For Blackmon, this is his second alcohol-related offense. He was arrested in 2010 for DUI when he was a sophomore at Oklahoma State University. Since then, Blackmon was selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. It's an interesting spot: Blackmon has participated in offseason activities with Jacksonville, but he has still not signed a contract with the Jaguars.

Alfie Crow from our Jaguars blog, Big Cat Country looked into the NFL rule book for an answer:

I wouldn’t be opposed [to a suspension] since it’s his second offense and he obviously didn’t learn from the first one, but the problem is under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, I’m not sure the team is allowed to. Section 6 of Article 42 states that teams are not allowed to punish players for violating the league’s substance abuse program.Get the complete explanation at Big Cat Country: Justin Blackmon DUI: New CBA Restricts Team Discipline.

We’ll probably have to wait to see what the league and team will say. Blackmon is still in custody, and a police report likely won’t be available until Monday, according to The Oklahoman.
