Dallas Cowboys linebacker Anthony Spencer will not sign a long-term deal prior to Monday's deadline for locking up franchised players. Spencer's agent Jordan Woy told ESPN Dallas on Friday night that his client will start the season playing under the franchise tender extended to him by the Cowboys this spring.
No Long-Term Deal Coming For Dallas Cowboys LB Anthony Spencer
Dallas Cowboys linebacker Anthony Spencer will not be signing a long-term deal prior to the July 16 deadline for franchise players to ink contract extensions.
The franchise tender will pay Spencer $8.8 million for the 2012 season. Spencer, 28, was a first-round pick by the Cowboys in the 2007 NFL Draft. He tallied six sacks last season, which was the second most on the team. He has a total of 17 sacks over the last three seasons. He led the team with four forced fumbles.
Woy left open the possibility of his client talking about a new contract with the Cowboys down the road. Under the rules of the league’s collective bargaining agreement, Spencer cannot sign a new deal until after the 2012 season.
Playing for a new contract could provide Spencer with a little extra motivation in 2012. Of course, he could also end up with the franchise tag again in 2013, albeit for a cost of more than $10 million.
