How big a deal is Tim Tebow? The biggest story in training camp involving a New York team will likely be how he fits in with the Jets — and the Giants are the defending Super Bowl champions. For their part, though, the Jets say the potential quarterback battle between incumbent starter Mark Sanchez and Tebow, who led the Broncos to the playoffs and a surprising Wild Card round win over the Steelers in 2011, won't be a distraction.
Jets’ Mark Sanchez, Rex Ryan Say Tim Tebow Won’t Be A Distraction
Sanchez chatted with The Michael Kay Show on Thursday and reiterated that he and Tebow are both on the Jets roster to help the team:
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: Mark Sanchez vs. Tim Tebow. Is that going to be a distraction?
“It would be real weird if we were married? No, it’s great. He’s a huge help for our team. He’s a hard worker and he pushes everybody.”
Sanchez’s completely incomprehensible joke about marriage aside, he also went on to say that there’s no ego involved in his play, and that he would be fine with being replaced by Tebow near the goal line in special packages.
Rex Ryan concurred with his quarterback’s assesment:
Will there be a distraction with Tim Tebow?
“Well again I guess it may be a distraction to some people, but I don’t think it will be to us. I really don’t. I think we are so focused on winning and building a football team. I don’t feel like we will be distracted. Now how it will be played out in the media may be a lot different.”
While Ryan and Sanchez are saying this now, though, what else would they say? “Yeah, Tebow’s gonna be a distraction” might be honest, but there’s nothing to be gained from saying that.
