The Indianapolis Colts donated $10,000 to select charities in honor of Irrelevant Week, a 37-year-old tradition within the Newport, Calif., community commemorating "Mr. Irrelevant", the last pick each year in the NFL Draft. The event also helps raise money for good causes. The Colts selected quarterback Chandler Harnish out of Northern Illinois with the final pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, 253rd overall.
Mr. Irrelevant Week Gets A Donation From Colts
The Indianapolis Colts donated $10,000 to charity in honor of Irrelevant Week. Northern Illinois quarterback Chandler Harnish is the current Mr. Irrelevant, after being taken 253rd overall in the 2012 NFL Draft.
For the honor of being picked last, Harnish and his family have been invited to participate in a number of events around Orange County this summer. The tradition was started in 1976 by Paul Salata, a 10th-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1951 NFL Draft.
Salata popularized the Mr. Irrelevant award, beginning in 1976. Kelvin Kirk, a wide receiver out of Dayton, was the first official Mr. Irrelevant after being selected by the Steelers in the 17th round with the 487th overall pick.
