Pete Carroll's stance on having the best man win through fair competition has gotten its biggest spotlight of late due to rookie quarterback Russell Wilson winning the starting quarterback spot over free agent signee Matt Flynn.
Pete Carroll On Russell Wilson, Matt Flynn And Quarterback Money
Pete Carroll has stuck to his guns in terms of how he wants to run his team. If that means his backup quarterback makes more money than his starter, then so be it.

Carroll joined 710 ESPN in Seattle to discuss why he has no problem having Flynn be a backup even though the Seahawks paid for him to come to town to be a starter.
“That’s the price of free agency. That’s the market. The market was driven there and we had to pay that price to get the player to come to our program and I said to you too that that doesn’t matter to me. I don’t want that to matter to me. We understand there is a thought about that, but as a coach I’m doing this for the competitive reasons in the facts that come out and if a guy gets paid more and he’s playing backup he better be a pretty good backup.”
Carroll has stuck to the competition model and it has allowed Wilson to win the starting job. No one can say Carroll’s not consistent.
