Steve Smith Remains Sidelined With Foot Injury

Carolina Panthers' wide receiver Steve Smith is still hobbled by an infection in his left foot, but the 12-year NFL veteran is starting to show signs of progress, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Rivera spoke to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, and said that Smith is starting to feel much better and is walking on his foot more and more each day. The infection in his foot was reported on Aug. 22, and Smith has been held out of practice ever since. He missed the Panthers' preseason game against the New York Jets on Aug. 27.

Smith emerged as Cam Newton’s favorite target last year, catching 79 balls last year for just under 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns.
