Gallery was expected to be in the mix at guard for the Patriots and his retirement now leaves New England with even more question marks along the offensive line. Guard Brian Waters, who started for New England last season, has still not reported to Patriots training camp.
The Patriots' other starting guard from last season, Logan Mankins, remains on the physically unable to perform list with a knee injury. Add in Gallery's departure and the Patriots have a long way to to go solidify their starting offensive line before the season starts.
Gallery signed with the Patriots in March after spending last season with the Seattle Seahawks. The Oakland Raiders used the No. 2 overall pick of the 2004 NFL draft to select Gallery. He played seven seasons for the Raiders before playing his first and only season in Seattle last year.
