When the New York Jets traded for Tim Tebow in the 2012 NFL offseason, everyone knew the coverage was going to go through the roof, and it has not disappointed. Former Jets quarterback and current NFL analyst Boomer Esiason has decided to weigh in on the polarizing Tebow, but he wasn't very friendly about it.
Boomer Esiason Calls For Jets To Cut Tim Tebow
Boomer Esiason thinks the New York Jets should cut quarterback Tim Tebow, because he doesn’t think he’s benefiting the team at all.
Esiason thinks the team should just outright release Tebow.
“I’m just telling you right now, I would (cut him), and I’ll tell you why I would,” Esiason WFAN New York Monday morning. “It’s not in any way, shape or form -- I think -- benefiting this team.”
Tebow struggled passing the football in the Jets' scrimmage over the weekend, completing just one of his four total passes, fumbling two snaps. He's currently listed as the second team quarterback behind Mark Sanchez and the team has said they plan to use the former Denver Broncos quarterback in goal line situations and in some wild-cat packages.
The team also plans to use Tebow as a punt protector on special teams, even utilizing some fake punts that have Tebow pass the football in training camp. It’s a bit over the top to say Tebow doesn’t benefit the Jets “in any way, shape or form” as Esiason intimates, because he does have a knack for scoring touchdowns in the redzone with the ball in his hand.
It’s clear, however, that Esiason doesn’t think Tebow offers the Jets anything at all from the actual quarterback position.
“You can say whatever you want about Tim Tebow,” Esiason said on WFAN. “He played some of the worst football that any quarterback has ever played in the history of the game last year at times.”
