Entering his third NFL season, San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews was finally healthy and primed for a breakout season. That plan got slightly derailed Thursday as Mathews suffered a broken clavicle during the Chargers first preseason game and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, according to a report from Michael Gehlken from U-T San Diego.
Ryan Mathews Suffers Broken Clavicle, Expected To Miss 4-6 Weeks
Chargers running back Ryan Mathews suffered a broken clavicle on his first preseason carry and is now expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

The injury occurred on Mathews’ first and only carry of the game. According to Chargers coach Norv Turner, Mathews will have surgery to repair the injury on Friday. The recovery time will cause Mathews to miss the rest of training camp and the preseason, but he might be able to return in time for the regular season opener.
While the injury appears to put a damper on what was supposed to be a big season for Matthews, Turner doesn’t necessarily think so.
Norv Turner: “My hopes for Ryan (Mathews) have not changed. ... I still expect him to have a great year.”
