NFL Teams Establishing Practice Squads After Roster Cuts

Not everyone is eligible for an NFL practice squad. It’s the sad reality for some players cut this weekend that there is no alternative other than making an active roster.

Once a player has played in six NFL games, he is no longer eligible for the practice squad. That means a handful of veterans are out of work after this weekend’s cuts.

The final roster cut deadline has come and gone, meaning teams can now begin to fill out their practice squads.

Throughout Sunday, teams have been announcing their practice squads. Each team is allowed to carry up to eight players on the practice squad.

Here’s the full eight-man group:

Allen was a surprise late cut after a strong preseason. White led the NCAA in receiving as a senior with over 1,900 yards for Western Michigan, and the Australian-born Smith has turned heads as he has tried to turn a professional rugby career into one in football.

You might remember Chris Hogan from his star turn as part of the Dolphin’s run as the team featured in HBO’s Hard Knocks, where he earned the praise of teammates and the nickname “7-11.”

Here is the Browns complete practice squad roster for 2012:

Jacobs is a second-year player out of Fresno State who played five games for the Browns last season but did not record any statistics. Elimimian was undrafted in 2007 out of the University of Hawaii and has been on the practice squad for the Bills (2008) and Vikings (2012), with a stint in the Canadian Football League for the BC Lions (2009-2011) coming in between.

Quarterback Zac Robinson and six other players were signed to the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad this afternoon as reported by SB Nation’s own Cincy Jungle.

Robinson, a two-year NFL veteran who was drafted in the 7th round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, joined the Bengals last September after being waived in the offseason by the Detroit Lions. Joining him on the practice squad are the following:

Now that the final batch of NFL roster cuts are in, teams will begin creating their eight-man practice squads. These are generally rookies or second year players who were cut in the last round of roster cuts. Those on practice squad practice with the team all year but they’re not treated as part of the 53-man roster.

The creation of practice squads can begin at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday.
