Browns Vs. Bengals, Week 2: Cincinnati Wins Despite Shaky Defensive Performance

The Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Cleveland Browns Sunday 34-27, but they hardly played a flawless game.

The Philadelphia Eagles limited Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden to only 118 yards, four interceptions and a quarterback rating of 5.1 in Week 1. Against the Bengals, Weeden had 322 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Running back Trent Richardson was limited to 39 rushing yards and 5 receiving yards in Week 1. He exploded for 109 yards and one touchdown rushing and 46 yards and one touchdown receiving against Cincinnati.

As Josh Kirkendall of SB Nation’s Cincinnati Bengals blog, Cincy Jungle, writes, Cincinnati’s defense has clearly been a problem:

It wasn’t pretty. Not one bit. In fact it was more frustration, as things go when perfection eludes the Bengals. Give credit to the Browns for being pesky or blame the Bengals defense, allowing Brandon Weeden to convert 26 of 37 passes for 322 yards passing, two touchdowns and a passer rating of 114.9. Or rookie Trent Richardson breaking Cincinnati’s laughable defense, generating 109 yards rushing on 19 carries and scoring two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving).

Including their Week 1 defeat at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens, the Bengals have now allowed 71 total points in 2012. Still, Cincinnati is 1-1 and sits atop the AFC North division standings. They face Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins in Week 3.
