Cardinals defense is good, but not great yet

The Cardinals’ 3-0 start can mainly be attributed to a young and physical defense that has stopped two explosive offenses in the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles in their tracks. But Kerry Rhodes won’t call the defense great - yet.

Arizona Cardinals defensive back Kerry Rhodes spoke with KTAR in Phoenix to talk about the Cardinals surprising start to the season and the impact he and the defense has had on the overall outlook of the team.

“The mood from us? It’s very workman like. Everybody ... this is what we expected. Like I said, we worked to get to this point - not only as a defense, but as a whole team.”

The fast start may be a surprise to football fans but not to the Cardinals. Rhodes sees everyday what the Cardinals are doing to prepare themselves for each game so playing how they’re playing isn’t a shock to him.

“It’s just every little detail and thing that you can do to get better as an individual and as a player and as a team. You see those guys buying in and doing it. It’s been fun to see.”

But unlike many of those who have jumped on the Cardinals’ bandwagon after this undefeated start, particularly those who have lauded the defensive play, Rhodes can’t call this defense a great defense just yet.

“No. Not yet. We are not great yet. We still have some things to work out. We still had some mistakes in the game this weekend, but I know that I don’t think there are many teams or defenses that are going to play as hard as we do and as physical as we do. I will go out on a limb and say that. As far as being great? We are not there yet.”

Rhodes is doing his part to help the defense get there and if they keep playing the way they’re playing, maybe Rhodes will change his mind down the line.
