Kellen Winslow asks for and receives release from Patriots

Tight end Kellen Winslow was granted his release from the New England Patriots on Thursday.

Kellen Winslow has asked for and was granted his release from the New England Patriots on Thursday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Last week, the Patriots signed the former Pro Bowl tight end to a one-year deal, as they were looking for a fill-in for the injured Aaron Hernandez.

Winslow participated in two practices and suited up for the Patriots Sunday night, playing just four offensive snaps in a 31-30 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Winslow was not present during Tuesday's practice and did not speak to reporters.

According to Football Outsiders’ Brian McIntyre, Winslow earned $48,529 in his brief time in New England.

The release is Winslow's second in less than a month. On Sept. 1, the Seattle Seahawks cut the former Miami Hurricane because he didn't want to take a salary cut. The Seahawks acquired Winslow in a spring trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team for which he tallied 75 receptions, 763 receiving yards and two touchdowns last season.
