Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt spoke with XTRA Sports in Phoenix about his decision to start John Skelton over Kevin Kolb and what that means for Kolb's future.
What Does Kevin Kolb Do Now That He’s The Backup?
Kevin Kolb will have to adjust to his new role as the backup to John Skelton in Arizona. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt stands behind his decision.

Whisenhunt mentioned that Kolb will eventually reach a point where he will see the field and that when that time comes, he’ll have the chance to get his confidence back.
“He’ll be ready and I expect him to be ready when he’s called upon and to play well.”
Whisenhunt couldn’t pinpoint one specific thing that led to Skelton being selected over Kolb, instead stating that it was a number of things.
“I don’t want to go through them point by point. But, ultimately, the bottom line is you’ve got to go with the player that you feel gives you the best chance to win right now. And that’s what we did.”
The decision to put the pricey quarterback in the reserve role behind the inexpensive blue collar guy led to understood exuberance from the guy who just wanted a chance.
“...Yes, you could definitely tell he was excited. I think the point where he is now, he understands the responsibility that comes with that position. And I’m interested to see how he handles it going forward.”
Skelton will be under center when the Cardinals face the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday in Week 1 of the NFL regular season.
