Chargers expected to hire Mike McCoy, according to report

McCoy leaves the Denver Broncos to land in San Diego.

Dustin Bradford

The San Diego Chargers are expected to announce Mike McCoy as their new head coach, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

McCoy, 40, has been the offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos since 2009. He was also the quarterbacks coach in Denver in 2009, and he served multiple coaching positions with the Carolina Panthers between 2000-2008.

McCoy replaces Norv Turner, who was fired Dec. 31. Turner was the head coach in San Diego for six seasons, and led the Chargers to the playoffs in his first three seasons in charge.

After advancing to the AFC Championship Game in 2007 -- Turner’s first season as head coach -- the Chargers could never replicate the same success. They made the divisional round in 2008 and 2009, but then were completely average over the final three seasons: the Chargers were 24-24 over that span.

Under McCoy's watch this season -- and new quarterback Peyton Manning -- the Broncos scored 30.1 points per game, which was second in the NFL. They averaged 397.9 yards per game, and that was the fourth-best mark in the league.
