Matt Flynn leads potential QB trade targets

Seemingly stuck behind rookie sensation Russell Wilson for the foreseeable future in Seattle, Matt Flynn could be the target of some serious trade talks this offseason.

USA TODAY Sports

Quarterback Matt Flynn's first season with the Seattle Seahawks didn't pan out quite as it was expected to — Russell Wilson's breakout season ensured that. But with more than a few teams in need of some help at the quarterback position, Flynn's name will likely be a top target of teams looking for help at the helm.

Flynn signed a three-year, $26-million contract before the start of the 2012 season, thinking he'd get a chance to parlay his success as Aaron Rodgers' backup in Green Bay into the starting gig in Seattle. Sure, as Seattle coach Pete Carroll said, Flynn had to compete with Tavaris Jackson for the spot, but Flynn tossed six touchdowns against the Detroit Lions in a start in Week 17 for the Packers. Claiming the starting job would be a cinch.

Instead, Wilson ended up being among the NFL season’s best story lines and relegated the 27-year-old to the sidelines. Wilson nearly brought the surprising Seahawks to the NFC Championship Game, and his future in Seattle looks bright.

Carroll and the Seattle staff even engineered an offense that better fit the mobile Wilson instead of the more pocket-oriented Flynn.

So when teams and general managers looking to improve their quarterback situation start their search this year, Flynn’s name is bound to come up as a top potential trade target. As the Seattle Times points out, Flynn is due $5.3 million next season, a sizable fee for a backup quarterback, so the Seahawks could be interested in moving Flynn.

Add a relatively weak NFL draft class and plenty of teams looking for help, and Flynn’s name will probably be mentioned plenty these next few months.
