49ers vs. Falcons: Atlanta announces honorary captains

Steve Bartowski, Warrick Dunn, Tommy Nobis, Jeff Van Note and Jessie Tuggle will represent the Falcons as honorary captains on Sunday.

Steve Bartowski, Warrick Dunn, Tommy Nobis, Jeff Van Note and Jessie Tuggle will serve as honorary captains of the Atlanta Falcons when they play the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship on Sunday, the team announced Friday.

Dunn was the most recent member of the Falcons, joining the team in 2002 and playing six seasons with it. Despite limited time with the team, Dunn accumulated 5,981 yards rushing and 30 touchdowns, finishing fourth on the all-time franchise rushing list, just five yards behind William Andrews.

Bartowski is the team’s all-time passing leader, although Matt Ryan is quickly approaching his mark, and played 11 seasons with the team after he was selected with the first pick of the 1975 NFL Draft.

Tuggle played his entire career with the Falcons after going undrafted in 1987. He retired in 2000 after 14 seasons with the Falcons and five Pro Bowl appearances, racking up 1,640 tackles. Nobis also was elected to five Pro Bowls during his 11-year career with the Falcons after he was selected with the first overall selection in the 1966 NFL Draft.

Van Note is the franchise leader in longevity, playing in 18 seasons and 155 consecutive games with the Falcons after being selected in 11th round of the 1969 NFL Draft.

Kickoff for Sunday’s game is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET and will be televised on FOX.
