Raiders hire Greg Olson as offensive coordinator, according to report

The Oakland Raiders hired Greg Olson - most recently the Jacksonville Jaguars quarterbacks coach - to be their offensive coordinator after firing Greg Knapp.

Phil Sears-US PRESSWIRE

The Oakland Raiders have hired Greg Olson to be their offensive coordinator after firing Greg Knapp, according to reports.

Olson, 49, had served as offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009 to 2011 before taking a job this past season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Olson served as offensive coordinator both for the St. Louis Rams and in Tampa Bay, getting fired from both jobs despite making the best of both situations. Olson had been the quarterbacks coach under Jon Gruden before being promoted to offensive coordinator. The Buccaneers never scored more than 21.3 points per game in Olson’s tenure. The Jaguars QB job was a difficult one, as Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne weren’t exactly the league’s best players at the position.

Despite his considerable experience as a quarterbacks coach, Olson is widely expected to install a scheme based on power running as he did in both St. Louis and Tampa Bay - a gameplan which should work well with Darren McFadden as the Raiders’ workhorse.

The Raiders went 4-12 this past season under Knapp, with their offense only scoring 18.1 points per game
