At the very least, Randy Moss has one more NFL game left in him, but the future Hall of Famer wouldn’t say whether he’ll retire at the end of the San Francisco 49ers’ season.

Randy Moss might come back for 2013 or he might not, but the future Hall of Famer made his mark on the San Francisco 49ers in 2012 as they head into the NFC Championship Game.

Moss, now 35, has played a bit part for the Niners. The 6’4 Moss is still a deep threat, but little more, only catching 30 passes on the season including the two he had in the team’s playoff win over the Green Bay Packers. That said, he’s important for San Francisco. Moss keeps defenses honest and opens up lots of space for No. 1 wide receiver Michael Crabtree, helping the team get to the NFC Championship Game Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. Win or lose, the wide receiver hasn’t said whether he’ll be back next season.
A Super Bowl win would be the first for the receiver now in his 14th season. He got close, setting the NFL record for touchdown catches with New England in the Patriots’ 18-1 season, but that one loss came in the Super Bowl. Moss had previously retired, sitting out the 2011 season, although that was partly because he was having trouble finding a team to sign him. Regardless, he came back for 2012 in hopes of winning a Super Bowl.
Rings or not, one has to assume Moss is an easy first-ballot pick for the Hall of Fame. He’s second all time with 156 touchdown receptions, third all time with 15,292 receiving yards, and ninth all time with 982 receptions. He’s been a Pro Bowler seven times and an all-Pro five times. His stint in San Francisco won’t be his most memorable based on stats, but that could change if he goes out on top with a championship.
For their part, everybody within the 49ers’ organization insists they’d love to have Moss back for another season, including coach Jim Harbaugh.
