Ryan would have played in the Super Bowl, however.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan sprained his left shoulder in Sunday's NFC Championship game loss to the San Francisco 49ers, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Ryan will miss the Pro Bowl this weekend because of the injury.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on Twitter that Ryan has a grade two AC joint sprain:

If the Falcons had beaten the 49ers, Ryan would have been able to play in the Super Bowl, according to Falcons coach Mike Smith, via Ledbetter.

Ryan’s season ended Sunday with a 28-24 loss to the 49ers. Atlanta owned a 17-0 lead and a 24-14 lead at halftime, but the 49ers stormed back to stamp their ticket to the Super Bowl.

It was a solid final game for Ryan, who has been the team’s starting quarterback since he was a rookie in 2008. Ryan was 30-of-42 for 396 yards and three touchdowns. He threw one interception, had a fumble and was sacked once.

Ryan completed 68 percent of his passes this season for a career-high 4,719 yards. He threw 32 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
