DeWayne Walker hired as Jaguars DB coach, according to report

After four years helming New Mexico, DeWayne Walker will reportedly return to the NFL as the Jacksonville Jaguars defensive backs coach under first-year coach Gus Bradley.

John Reed-US PRESSWIRE

New Jacksonville Jaguars coach Gus Bradley added a college head coach to his staff in Jacksonville on Tuesday, reportedly hiring New Mexico State Aggies head coach DeWayne Walker to be his defensive backs coach with the Jaguars, according to Football Scoop.

Walker led the Aggies to a fourth consecutive losing season in 2012, going 1-11 to run his career record with New Mexico State to 10-40 in four seasons. But his lengthy career in the NFL was reportedly attractive to Bradley, as the former Minnesota Golden Gopher spent time with the Washington Redskins, New England Patriots and New York Giants as a defensive backs coach.

Football Scoop also reported that Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was instrumental in Walker's hiring, as he had worked with Walker in New England and with the USC Trojans. Bradley was Carroll's defensive coordinator in Seattle during 2012.

Before coming to New Mexico State, Walker served as defensive coordinator with the UCLA Bruins for three years. He also served as interim head coach of the Bruins during the 2007 Las Vegas Bowl.

Aggies offensive coordinator Doug Martin is reportedly a lead candidate to replace Walker at New Mexico State.
