Tim Brown walks back Super Bowl sabotage comments

Callahan never sabotaged the Super Bowl, Brown says.

Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

In what seems to be polishing of his comments from Saturday, former Oakland Raiders receiver Tim Brown said Wednesday that he didn't say Bill Callahan threw the Super Bowl, via Sports Illustrated:

“I have never said he sabotaged the game,” Brown said in an interview Wednesday on the Dan Patrick Show

Brown originally said he and his teammates “all called it sabotage, because Callahan and [former coach Jon Gruden] was good friends, and Callahan had a big problem with the Raiders.”

Brown claimed -- and still claims -- that Callahan changed the offensive game plan just two days before the Super Bowl. The team was originally going to attack the Buccaneers on the ground, but Callahan changed it to a pass-first offense the Friday before.

When it comes to the game plan, Brown said former Raiders owner Al Davis might have had an impact on it, saying “it’s not out of the realm of possibilities.”

Brown’s former teammate and wide receiver, Jerry Rice, backed up Brown’s original story. Rice said he had never seen a coach change a game plan so soon before a game.

Callahan denied all allegations Tuesday.
