Tim Tebow picked the Jets, says John Elway

Tim Tebow had a choice between the Jets and the Jaguars. Tebow chose the Jets, saying it was “the best opportunity.”

USA TODAY Sports

John Elway, the Denver Broncos' executive vice president of football operations, told WFAN on Thursday that former Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow chose to be traded to the New York Jets instead of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Tebow told Elway that he thought going to the Jets was “the best opportunity for him.”

Elway confirmed that Tebow was given a choice between New York and Jacksonville after [Peyton] Manning was brought in.

“You know, we laid it out to Tim. We said ‘It’s up to you,’” Elway said. “I’m not going to tell you which deal I liked better. But I will tell you that we did give him the option.”

Elway also said that “in the right situation,” Tebow could work for an NFL team.

The Jets acquired Tebow last March for a fourth- and sixth-round draft pick.

Despite the hype that surrounded Tebow, the Jets never figured out how to use him best in Tony Sparano’s offense. He appeared in 12 games for the Jets, completing 6 of 8 passes for 39 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. He didn’t do much on the ground, either, compiling 102 yards on 32 carries.

After becoming the starting quarterback for Denver in 2011, Tebow found some success. He completed 46 percent of his passes but led the team to a 7-4 record and a trip to the AFC divisional round. He threw 12 touchdowns and just six picks. He was dangerous on the ground, too, rushing for 660 yards and six touchdowns on 122 carries.

The Jets will reportedly cut Tebow this offseason if they can’t find a team willing to acquire the 2007 Heisman winner. SB Nation’s Gang Green Nation is currently debating the same topic: Should Tebow stick around, or should the Jets dump him?
