NFL coaching rumors: Rob Ryan has reported deal with Rams

It didn’t take long for Rob Ryan to find a new place to coach defense.

Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE

The St. Louis Rams will hire former Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan in the same position, according to NFL.com. Nothing has been officially signed yet, but the announcement of the hiring is expected.

Ryan has spent nine seasons in the NFL as a defensive coordinator. He worked with the Raiders from 2004 to 2008 before moving to the Browns in 2009 and 2010. The Cowboys added him in 2011 but fired him following the conclusion of the 2012 season.

The Rams will be a good situation for Ryan to join, as they were good on defense in 2012. St. Louis finished seventh in Football Outsiders’ weighted DVOA, a metric that measures how a team compares to the average, with emphasis given to recent performance.

Things will certainly get more difficult in the NFC West, with the emergence of strong offenses in San Francisco and Seattle. Both teams have mobile quarterbacks that run the read option, something that Ryan's Cowboy defense struggled to stop against the Redskins in 2012.
