Brian Hartline contract: Dolphins WR reportedly wants big raise

Entering the offseason, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brian Hartline is reportedly looking for $5-6 million per year.

The Miami Dolphins are coming off their first rebuilding season under new head coach Joe Philbin. In his first year, the team got rid of Brandon Marshall, Chad Johnson and brought in a new quarterback. In the 2012 NFL Draft, they took Ryan Tannehill and started him immediately.

Now that the quarterback has gotten his feet wet, the team should look to build around him starting this coming offseason. Tannehill immediately struck up a chemistry with receiver Brian Hartline, who by skill set is a No. 2 WR. In his fourth year, Hartline had his best year as a pro by far.

Now, the Miami Herald is reporting that Hartline is looking for a deal where he’d average $5-6 million per year. This isn’t top receiver money, but it is ball park for a No. 2 like Hartline. In order to have some sort of continuity around the young quarterback, Miami may decide to pony up the dough.

Hartline hit career highs with Tannehill, accumulating 74 receptions for 1,084 yards in 2012. They were able to move the ball down the length of the field, but they had difficult connecting for scores. Hartline only had one touchdown reception this season.

The Dolphins may pay him, but mind you, they are expected to look for a true No. 1 for Tannehill this offseason. Miami shouldn’t let Hartline’s contract situation affect who they pursue in free agency.
