Long-time teammate and friend Ed Reed hinted Monday that maybe Lewis won't retire, according to NFL.com's Chris Wesseling:
Cynical NFL fans can be forgiven for questioning Lewis’ commitment to the decision. In fact, long-time teammate Ed Reed warned reporters gathered in New Orleans not to be “so sure” that Super Bowl XLVII will indeed be the future Hall of Famer’s last game.
“Maybe he’ll play 10 games next year,” added Reed.
Reed might be holding out hope, or just trying to mess with the media. Lewis might already have a deal in place to be an analyst for ESPN. The 17-year veteran has continued to say he plans on focusing on his family after his playing career.
It’s hard to go out on top, like Lewis very well could, but Wesseling said, “We suspect Lewis will follow through with his pledge after Sunday’s game.”
Sunday will likely wrap up a career that started in 1996. Lewis has spent his entire 17-year career with the Ravens, earning 13 trips to the Pro Bowl and being named a First-Team All-Pro seven times.
Super Bowl XLVII takes place Sunday between the Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET in New Orleans.
