Super Bowl 2013: Alex Smith says he’s not thinking about release from 49ers

Smith is expected to be a hot commodity in the offseason, whether that’s on the trade or free agency market.

Just one day after Mike Florio of NBC Sports' ProFootballTalk reported that Alex Smith will request a release after Super Bowl XLVII, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback told the media on Tuesday that he has no idea where the report came from and said that he isn't thinking about a release, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

Smith, 28, is expected to be a hot commodity during the 2012 offseason whether via trade or free agency, after the 49ers elected to name Colin Kaepernick as the team's starting quarterback in November.

Prior to his replacement, Smith completed 70.8 percent of his passes and threw 13 touchdowns with just five interceptions. No quarterback in the NFL finished 2012 with a completion percentage above 70 and Smith's 104.1 quarterback rating would have placed him third among qualifying passers behind only Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning.

Smith was selected by the 49ers with the first overall selection in the 2005 NFL Draft and has started 75 career games with the team.
