Ron Rivera will return as Panthers coach

After meeting with owner Jerry Richardson, Ron Rivera will remain as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers for the start of the 2013 season.

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Carolina owner Jerry Richardson told Ron Rivera in a meeting Saturday morning that he will remain the head coach of the Panthers for the beginning of next season.

Prior to the meeting, Rivera’s status was unclear even after surviving the many firings of coaches and general managers this past Monday.

The Panthers fired GM Marty Hurney after Carolina went 1-5 to begin the year. Following the tough start, the Panthers went 6-4 to end the season, including winning five of their final six games. One of those victories came against the Atlanta Falcons, who finished the regular season with the best record in football at 13-3 and a No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

In his two seasons at the helm of Carolina, Rivera has compiled a 13-19 record. Prior to becoming a head coach, Rivera was the defensive coordinator of the San Diego Chargers from 2008-10.
