Tony Sparano fired by Jets, according to report

The Jets’ offense ranked 28th in scoring this season.

Debby Wong-US PRESSWIRE

The New York Jets have fired offensive coordinator Tony Sparano, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Sparano didn’t spend much time in New York. Sparano signed on with the Jets last January and was fired almost exactly a year to the day that he was hired to be the offensive coordinator. His contract was reportedly for three seasons.

This means the Jets will be looking for their third offensive coordinator in three seasons.

Behind Mark Sanchez, the Jets had one of the worst offenses in the NFL. They scored 281 points -- or 17.6 points per game -- which ranked 28th out of 32 NFL teams.

New York finished the season 6-10, which stuck it in last place in the AFC East.

Sparano apparently wasn’t a good influence on Sanchez, who had his worst season as a professional quarterback. Sanchez completed just 54 percent of his passes for 2,883 yards and 13 touchdowns. He threw 18 interceptions.

Sparano joined the Jets last season after being the head coach for the Miami Dolphins for four seasons. After leading the Dolphins to an 11-5 record and a playoff appearance in his first season in 2008, the Dolphins went downhill and won just 18 games over the next three seasons. He was fired after Week 14 in 2011.
