NFL Week 8 injury roundup: RG3, Michael Vick knocked out early

Another week and more bad news for Robert Griffin III and Michael Vick, who both suffered leg injuries in losses Sunday. The latest on them, plus updates on Ryan Broyles, Brandon Gibson, Sebastian Vollmer and Julius Thomas below.

Robert Griffin III and Michael Vick highlighted Sunday's injury news in Week 8. Griffin grabbed his left knee after taking a big hit in the fourth quarter of the Washington Redskins' loss to the Denver Broncos. Vick aggravated his hamstring on a second quarter scramble, forcing the Philadelphia Eagles to rely on rookie Matt Barkley at quarterback in a loss to the New York Giants.

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said after the game that Griffin was "OK," and that the quarterback was held out in part due to the lopsided score. Kirk Cousins finished out the rest of the quarter after Griffin left with the Redskins down 38-21 with under six minutes to play.

Vick’s injury may be more serious. He admitted that he felt a pop in his hamstring, which had held him out of the Eagles’ previous two games. Vick will undergo an MRI on Monday, the results of which could mean more time spent on the sideline.

More injury news from Sunday:

Ryan Broyles likely out for the season ... again

Detroit Lions head coach all but confirmed the worst for Ryan Broyles, saying after Sunday's win over the Dallas Cowboys that Broyles likely suffered a ruptured Achilles' tendon after calling fair catch on a punt return. The injury would mean an early end to Broyles season for a third straight year. He tore his right ACL just 10 games into his 2012 rookie season, and tore his left ACL nine games into his senior season at Oklahoma.

The good news for the Lions is that Nate Burleson may be able to return after the team's Week 9 bye. There is no upshot for Broyles, however, whose career may be in jeopardy due to his inability to stay on the field.

Brandon Gibson likely suffers season-ending knee injury

More bad news for wide receivers: Brandon Gibson is likely done for the year, according to reports. Gibson reportedly suffered a torn patella tendon after jumping up for a high Ryan Tannehill pass during the first quarter of the Miami Dolphins' loss to the New England Patriots. Gibson still has to undergo an MRI to confirm the news, but he didn't seem confident after the game.

Via the Florida Sun-Sentinel:

“Each and every game was a good experience for me. I feel like I was getting better,” said Gibson, who had caught 30 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns. “But this kind of puts a damper on it now. I’ll take from my experiences and learn from it.”

Sebastian Vollmer suffers serious leg injury

Sebastian Vollmer may also be out for the season, after suffering a serious leg injury in the Pats' win over the Dolphins. Vollmer's leg was put in an air cast and the right tackle was carted off the field. According to the Boston Globe, he suffered a broken leg.

Vollmer's leg was rolled up on by defensive tackle Randy Starks on a second quarter running play. CBS mics caught him screaming in pain as he lay face down on the the turf. Vollmer was replaced by backup Marcus Cannon.

Julius Thomas will undergo MRI on ankle injury

Julius Thomas will undergo an MRI on Monday for a better look at the ankle injury he suffered Sunday. The tight end hobbled to the bench with an apparent ankle injury during the third quarter of the Broncos’ win over the Redskins. When he got to the sideline, Thomas slammed his helmet into the bench in frustration. Unfortunately for Thomas, he has a bad history of ankle injuries.

Thomas has been one of the breakout stars of the 2013 NFL season. He has 39 receptions for 451 yards and eight touchdowns thus far.
